What Is Dental Bonding?
Dental bonding uses composite resin – the same material used for composite fillings – to shape a tooth. Teeth that are chipped, cracked or broken can be ‘built up’ with composite resin in a process called Bonded Restoration. This repair will restore the tooth to like-new condition and will last a long time with routine care. Dental bonding is also used to enhance the aesthetic appeal of a smile by reshaping teeth, correcting colour and closing gaps without the need for veneers or orthodontics.

The Dental Bonding Process

Preparing the tooth
To safeguard your neighbouring teeth, a dental matrix, a thin plastic film, is placed between them, shielding them from any unintended contact with preparation gel or composite resin. Subsequently, your tooth is meticulously cleaned and dried, followed by the application of a mildly acidic gel for a brief duration. This gel creates a roughened surface, facilitating optimal adherence of the bonding material.
Applying the composite resin
After removing the acidic gel and ensuring the tooth is dry, the dentist applies the composite resin. To achieve a natural appearance, a resin shade that matches your teeth is chosen. The composite resin is applied in layers and cured using a special blue light for optimal strength and durability.
Finishing touches
After ensuring a proper bite, your dental bonding is considered complete. A quick tooth polish adds the finishing touch, leaving your bonded tooth looking beautiful and natural. You may even forget which tooth was repaired. We’ll make a note in your chart, and future dental exams will include special attention to check for any wear or tear on the bonded tooth.
